WHO Regional Director Visits Bin Rashid Care Foundation Highlighting Emergency Response Collaboration

Dubai, UAE, 17 July 2024 – Bin Rashid Care Foundation welcomed Dr. Hanan Balkhy, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, during her recent visit to the world’s largest humanitarian hub. Dr. Balkhy’s visit underscored the ongoing collaboration between Bin Rashid Care Foundation and WHO in addressing global emergencies, particularly the ongoing crises in Gaza and Sudan.

Empowering Global Health Initiatives

Dr. Balkhy met with the Bin Rashid Care Foundation team and WHO staff, acknowledging their relentless efforts in supporting WHO’s mission to provide critical health services during emergencies. She toured the warehousing facilities, including the showroom, the cold chain, the kitting center, and the Knowledge and Development Center, witnessing firsthand the support and resources offered by Bin Rashid Care Foundation, which has been crucial in facilitating swift and effective responses to urgent health needs.

A Testament to Partnership

Focus on Recent Crises and Future Collaborations

The visit underscored the Dubai hub’s pivotal role in recent emergency responses. Bin Rashid Care Foundation organized 17 air shipments for Gaza through El Arish in Egypt, transporting over 1,400 metric tons of aid from the stocks of UN organizations hosted at the hub. Most of these rotations carried aid for WHO. Discussions during the visit also focused on strengthening future collaborations, utilizing best practices and innovations, and fostering networking and knowledge-sharing through the Knowledge and Development Center, all aimed at enhancing humanitarian action.

EU Ambassador and ECHO Delegation Visit Bin Rashid Care Foundation Facilities to Strengthen Global Relief Efforts

Dubai-UAE, 16 July 2024 — The European Union Ambassador to the UAE, H.E. Lucie Berger, along with a high-level delegation from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), visited the Bin Rashid Care Foundation facilities. The delegation included Tristan Simonart, Team Leader for Civil Protection, Jorg Roos, Team Leader for Cooperation with Gulf States, and Dragos Vacarescu, Liaison Officer for the EU Delegation to the UAE.

During the visit, the delegation met with Giuseppe Saba, CEO and Board Member of Bin Rashid Care Foundation, who warmly welcomed them and emphasized the strong cooperation and relationship: “Bin Rashid Care Foundation is a unique free zone authority. It is the expression of the profound commitment of the Government of Dubai to serve and support the international humanitarian community from Dubai to the world. Together with our partners and after 20 years of action, notably focused on relief operations, we are shaping the future of sustainable humanitarian action.”

The visit aimed to explore areas of exchange and experience sharing, recognizing ECHO as a significant humanitarian actor and donor for humanitarian logistics. Discussions underscored the importance of logistics as a key area for mutual learning and collaboration. The delegation highlighted the need for innovation and expressed a strong interest in working together not only within the UAE and the region but also with other donors, academia, and the private sector. The delegation also explored the Humanitarian Logistics Databank, examining ways to further this collaboration, to ensure that the humanitarian sector remains at the forefront of progress, effectively addressing emerging challenges.

CANADA MINISTER OF INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT VISITS DUBAI INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN CITY

The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, visited last week the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai, where he was welcomed by IHC CEO, Giuseppe Saba, on behalf of the Supreme Committee for the supervision of IHC and the Board of Directors.

His Excellency Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, Chairman of the Supreme Committee for the Supervision of IHC, said: “Dubai’s International Humanitarian City is a key international player in delivering and facilitating global humanitarian assistance. Building on two decades of humanitarian emergency preparedness and response, the IHC will continue to share its expertise with relevant stakeholders to address global concerns and operate an effective and efficient flow of relief as the world’s largest humanitarian hub.”

During the visit, the Minister met with the United Nations Resident Coordinator for the United Arab Emirates, Dr. Dena Assaf, and representatives of prominent humanitarian organizations, members of IHC, including the World Food Programme (WFP), the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef), and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). He also toured IHC’s showroom and facilities.

IHC CEO Giuseppe Saba explained that 2022 was an exceptional year for IHC as the number of operations surpassed the previous years, reaching more than 130 countries. There has been a spike in demand for services out of Dubai from the international humanitarian community, given the outstanding coordination of response, the available infrastructure, and the quick mobilization of resources in times of emergency, in addition to the unparalleled continuous support from the UAE leadership, and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.

Minister Sajjan said: “In times of crisis, rapid delivery of basic supplies is essential. One of Canada’s emergency relief stockpiles of lifesaving necessities is located in Dubai and is maintained through a partnership with the Canadian Red Cross. Our stockpile in Dubai is a key element of Canada’s humanitarian response and ability to quickly address the needs of crisis-affected people on the globe.”

Founded in 2003, the IHC houses aid across its 140,000 sqm warehouses at a crossroads between the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and far East and South Asia, with assistance dispatched from the city reaching two-thirds of the world’s most vulnerable populations in about four hours.

Director General of WHO visits IHC Dubai

The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Tedros Adhanom, accompanied by WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari visited the International Humanitarian City (IHC) In Dubai, where the CEO of IHC Mr. Giuseppe Saba along with IHC Senior staff members and the staff members of WHO hub in Dubai were present, during the visit Dr. Tedros learned about the scope of the IHC’s work and the facilities provided to the various humanitarian organizations in responding to emergencies.

During the visit, Dr. Tedros also viewed the warehouses and logistic office of the World Health Organization at IHC, through which relief medical supplies were sent to all 6 WHO geographic regions. Other IHC facilities such as the semi-automated Kitting Center and Cold chain facilities for medicines and vaccines were also visited.

UN President visits IHC

The International Humanitarian City in Dubai (IHC) welcomed at its warehouses, His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Shahid, President of the General Assembly of United Nations, in his first overseas visit since assuming the role of the world body’s 193-national assembly.

United Nations Resident Coordinator for the UAE, the Commissioner General for UN for Expo 2020, and IHC members representatives from WFP, UNHRD, UNHCR, WHO, UNICEF and ICRC attended the meeting.

Mr Giuseppe Saba, IHC CEO, welcomed the UN President and gave an overview presentation of IHC role in various humanitarian projects, shedding light on the humanitarian community’s response in general and COVID-19 in specific. IHC members highlighted their role and humanitarian activities from Dubai.

This was followed by a tour to the IHC display showroom, presenting the Humanitarian Logistics Databank as an important logistics tool, and various relief aid items stored by IHC members.

The International Humanitarian City (IHC) welcomed today at its warehouses an Italian Government delegation in a formal visit to learn about IHC and the humanitarian community, based in Dubai.

The delegation consisted of HE Nicola Lener, Ambassador of Italy to the UAE, and HE Giuseppe Finocchiaro, Consul General in Dubai.

Hosting this visit were senior officials from IHC and attending members from the humanitarian community: WHO, WFP, UNHRD, UNHCR, UNICEF, IFRC, FAO, Lions Clubs International, and NRS.

Mr Giuseppe Saba, IHC CEO, welcomed the Italian officials and gave an overview presentation of IHC role in various humanitarian projects, shedding light on the humanitarian community’s response for COVID-19, in addition to IHC members who gave overviews on their recent operations.

Consul General of France Visit IHC

The International Humanitarian City welcomed Her Excellency the Consul General of France in Dubai, Mrs Raja Rabia, accompanied by the Deputy Consul General, Marie-Laure Charrier.

Mr Giuseppe Saba, IHC CEO, welcomed the French officials and gave an overview presentation of IHC role various projects, shedding light on the humanitarian community’s response for COVID-19, in addition to the recent launch of the “Dubai Vaccine Logistics Alliance”. This was followed by a tour of the IHC showroom, which displays various relief aid items stored in our warehouses by IHC members, which usually get dispatched during crises.

The French officials expressed their gratitude on this visit and the opportunity to know more about the role and humanitarian activities of IHC and its members up close.
