Government of Dubai Media Office – 11 April 2025: Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Bin Rashid Care Foundation facilitated the airlift of critical medical supplies to Myanmar following the powerful earthquake that struck the country’s central region earlier this month.

The humanitarian flight, operated in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), departed from Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) this morning and arrived at Yangon International Airport (RGN). The shipment included 39.5 metric tonnes of critical medical supplies, including medicines and equipment, to support health facilities responding to the emergency.

Giuseppe Saba, CEO and Board Member of Bin Rashid Care Foundation, said: “In times of extreme crisis, such as what we are witnessing in Myanmar, it is essential for the international community to unite in delivering a timely and coordinated response. Government of Dubai Media Office – 15 October 2023: Dubai’s International Humanitarian City (IHC) announced that it has launched an urgent humanitarian airbridge operation to transport essential medical supplies and food assistance to Egypt and Lebanon. The operation is in preparation for and in response to the growing challenges brought about by the ongoing crisis in the region.

The airbridge operation also comes in response to an immediate request for aid from the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Giuseppe Saba, CEO of Dubai’s International Humanitarian City, stated: “The humanitarian airbridge has been swiftly established to transport urgently needed relief supplies to populations affected by the escalating crisis in the region. This mobilisation is a testament to the spirit of cooperation in times of conflict and dire need, as IHC leverages its vast network and resources to bolster humanitarian efforts, supporting rapid responses to humanitarian crises, improving readiness for emergencies, and ultimately, saving innocent lives.”

The initial shipment, consisting of more than 11 metric tonnes of essential supplies from WFP and UNICEF’s stockpile, including water, sanitation, hygiene, dignity kits, crucial aid materials, and essential food provisions, departed from Dubai today to El Arish in the North Sinai Governorate of Egypt. This delivery significantly boosts healthcare response capacity through the Egyptian Red Crescent, ensuring that communities are well-equipped to address the urgent requirements resulting from the ongoing crisis. Moreover, the substantial quantity of food items will aid in alleviating the impact of food shortages on the most vulnerable.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered a third airlift of relief aid mobilised by Dubai’s International Humanitarian City (IHC) to Benghazi, Libya, as part of ongoing efforts to support people affected by the escalating humanitarian crisis triggered by the devastating impact of Storm Daniel.

The relief mission, employing a Boeing 747 aircraft, took off from Dubai World Central Airport early Friday morning. On board were over 90 metric tonnes of vital aid, including essential shelter materials, kitchen sets, blankets, jerricans, and other crucial relief items provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

Amidst the increasing scale of destruction and the growing number of missing people in eastern Libya, which necessitated a prompt and robust response from the global aid community, Giuseppe Saba, CEO of Dubai’s International Humanitarian City, reiterated the commitment to aiding vulnerable populations during times of crisis.

He stated, “Emphasising our dedication to providing essential assistance to the global humanitarian community striving to address the rapidly escalating needs of thousands of individuals, this marks the third Benghazi-bound airlift facilitated by IHC in the past three weeks. Aligned with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai’s International Humanitarian City remains steadfast in its mission to support those in need and advance the collaborative endeavours of international humanitarian responders in swiftly and efficiently preserving lives.”

Khaled Khalifa, Senior Advisor and UNHCR’s Representative to the GCC countries said, “We are grateful for our humanitarian partnership with the International Humanitarian City, and the continued support for the ongoing emergency response in Libya. This airlift from Dubai included 35 metric tonnes of emergency supplies to support people affected by the tragedy.”

He added, “The generous contribution of IHC through covering the transportation costs helps bolster our efforts in distributing relief items to the worst-affected areas in the east of the country.”

Ilir Caushaj, IFRC Head of Global Logistics Hub Dubai, said, “In partnership with Dubai’s International Humanitarian City, we are continuing the air bridge operation in airlifting humanitarian aid to Libya as we dispatched 55 metric tonnes of relief items. We participated in facilitating the arrival of the aircraft to Benghazi airport, which carried IFRC’s third air shipment from the Dubai hub of household kits, blankets, kitchen sets, and water sanitation kits, for an additional 12,500 most-in-need people who have lost their families and homes in the affected areas.”

This relief airlift was made possible through the Global Humanitarian Impact Fund, a resource established and mobilised by IHC to support critical humanitarian missions across the globe.

Last month, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum ordered the activation of the relief air bridge to dispatch aid shipments to the individuals affected by the major humanitarian crisis in flood-devastated eastern Libya. Since then, IHC has extended its support to transport relief supplies for five prominent international humanitarian organisations.

Government of Dubai Media Office – 19 September 2023: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered airlifts to facilitate the dispatch of relief aid mobilised by the International Humanitarian City (IHC) to support people affected by the major humanitarian crisis in flood-devastated eastern Libya.

His Excellency Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, Chairman of Dubai’s International Humanitarian City, stated: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Libya in the wake of this tragedy. Dubai’s International Humanitarian City reaffirms its dedication to providing assistance to those affected, and we stand ready with our partners to help alleviate their suffering. This activation marks the third humanitarian task force response by the IHC in 2023, in response to unexpected emergency crises events across Middle East and North Africa.”

Today (Tuesday), IHC dispatched a second aircraft to the Libyan city of Benghazi transporting approximately 100 tonnes of shelter, food and telecommunications items from the stockpile of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the World Food Programme’s United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) and Fast IT and Telecommunications Emergency and Support Team (FITTEST).

Khaled Khalifa, Senior Advisor and UNHCR’s Representative to the GCC countries, lauded the humanitarian role of the UAE, which is a model to follow in providing the needed support to facilitate the work of humanitarian and aid organisations in responding to emergencies in the region and around the world, through their global stockpiles hosted in Dubai. “The humanitarian situation in Libya is catastrophic. The storm and the floods caused massive destruction and great loss of lives and left thousands of people displaced after their homes were destructed and their properties lost, and they became in desperate need of urgent assistance,” he said. “Thanks to the generous support of IHC, UNHCR will be able to continue to provide support to the ongoing relief efforts and deliver the needed supplies to the areas and people most affected by the floods in Libya,” he added.

Following the crisis, IHC urgently mobilised resources through its Global Humanitarian Impact Fund to facilitate a humanitarian relief airbridge to help people affected by the devastating impact of Storm Daniel. The catastrophic event has claimed thousands of lives and left many missing.

On Saturday morning, the first charter airplane arrived in Benghazi, Libya, carrying over 36 tonnes of crucial relief items from the stocks of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.

“In the face of this tragic disaster, the delivery of 29 metric tonnes of essential medicines, trauma, and emergency surgery supplies to Libya from WHO’s Global Logistics Centre in Dubai’s International Humanitarian City stands as a symbol of regional solidarity. Thanks to the generous support of the government of Dubai and IHC, these supplies will reach over 250,000 people. It exemplifies our shared commitment to WHO’s regional vision of ‘Health for All, by All,’ said Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean

IHC’s active role in the humanitarian crises in the region reaffirms its status as the largest humanitarian hub in the world and its ongoing efforts to support and coordinate the work of a global network of humanitarian hubs. IHC’s approach prioritises preparedness and swift response to world crises to maximise the collective impact of sustainable humanitarian efforts.

Dubai, UAE – 03 June 2023 – Third airlift of aid supplies for those affected by the crisis in Sudan left Dubai’s International Humanitarian City (IHC), the world’s largest humanitarian hub, on Saturday morning. Essential aid supplies from the World Health Organization (WHO), were shipped from the warehouses of the IHC.

Under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and the Ruler of Dubai, the IHC has once again demonstrated its steadfast commitment to alleviating the suffering caused by the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

In close coordination with the WHO, IHC has successfully completed its third relief airlift addressing the urgent needs of the affected populations and solidifying its role as a key provider of support to vulnerable people in need. Departing on 3 June 2023, the IHC transported vital supplies provided by WHO to Aswan, Egypt. Aswan serves as a pivotal gateway for the distribution of aid in the region.

The mission was carried out using a C-130 aircraft, generously offered by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s personal fleet. Onboard the flight were more than 10 metric tons of cargo, occupying a volume of around 46 cubic meters. This cargo consisted of essential medical supplies, which will directly benefit 49,000 individuals in desperate need of assistance.

Expressing his gratitude, His Excellency Mohammed Ibrahim Al ShaibaniChairman of Dubai’s International Humanitarian City, acknowledged the unwavering support and leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in these critical relief efforts. Al Shaibani reiterated IHC’s full commitment to providing immediate and life-saving assistance to those affected by the conflict in Sudan:

‘Over the past 20 years, Dubai’s International Humanitarian City (IHC) has relentlessly committed to delivering crucial humanitarian aid to individuals in need across the globe. Dubai has emerged as the largest global hub for humanitarian efforts, with IHC playing a crucial role in fostering this positive transformation. The successful completion of this airlift mission serves as a testament to our dedication to alleviating suffering and providing life-saving assistance to those affected by the conflict in Sudan. In collaboration with our partners, we will continue our work to make an impact on the lives of the most vulnerable when it is most needed’

According to Robert Blanchard from WHO Emergency Operations team in Dubai: “The World Health Organization’s logistics hub in Dubai continues to play a vital role in responding to acute health emergencies around the world. Due to the conflict in Sudan, WHO responded with the immediate delivery of essential medicines along with trauma and surgical supplies through two charter, providing a lifeline to people in need of health care in Sudan. Recognizing the impact on health facilities across the border in Egypt, WHO is sending an additional 10 metric tons of supplies to Aswan to reach approximately 49,000 patients who have arrived from Sudan to Egypt. The health supplies include non-communicable disease kits for the treatment of hypertension and diabetes as well as pediatric severe acute malnutrition kits to provide immediate care for over 4,000 children.

8 May 2023, Dubai, UAE – A comprehensive airlift of around 80 metric tons of aid supplies for those affected by the crisis in Sudan left Dubai’s International Humanitarian City (IHC), the world’s largest humanitarian hub, on Monday evening. Essential aid supplies from UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency’s Global Stockpile, were shipped from the warehouses of the IHC.

Following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and in line with IHC’s mandate to enable humanitarian emergency response operations and lead coordination between partners, IHC facilitated the aid airlift, which was funded through IHC’s Global Humanitarian Impact Fund. The plane departed from Dubai’s Al Maktoum Airport, bound for Chad’s capital N’Djamena, for the benefit of those who fled the conflict in Sudan seeking safety in neighboring countries.

This first shipment of aid is destined to serve more than 27 000 beneficiaries. It consisted of shelter items, such as blankets, sleeping mats, solar lamps, buckets, jerry cans, mosquito nets, plastic sheets, and kitchen sets.

IHC Chairman, His Excellency Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, expressed his gratitude to the dedicated aid workers and members of IHC who are striving to work round the clock to meet the needs of the Sudanese people, saying, The ongoing conflict in Sudan continues to cause unfolding humanitarian crises which the IHC remains committed and ready to respond to. IHC will continue to work tirelessly to facilitate the delivery of aid from all its partners to ensure that the affected populations receive the assistance they urgently require.”

A second plane, donated personally by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is also scheduled to depart in the coming days. In addition to UNHCR’s shelter items, it will carry essential telecommunication equipment for the World Food Programme’s Fast IT and Telecommunications Emergency and Support Team (WFPFITTEST).

Khaled Khalifa, Senior Advisor to the High Commissioner and UNHCR’s Regional Representative to the GCC countries said: “The humanitarian situation in and around Sudan is tragic. The majority of people fleeing and seeking safety are women and children, some are still staying out in the open or under trees, while others are sleeping in makeshift shelters, and lack clean water and food. To ensure timely delivery of life-saving assistance, more support is urgently needed.” He added“We appreciate IHC’s support in transporting much-needed relief items from UNHCR’s Global Stockpile in Dubai, which lends us a helping hand in providing emergency assistance to those fleeing Sudan and arriving in neighbouring countries, including Chad.”

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, and the need for humanitarian aid has never been greater. The IHC recognizes the urgency of the situation and remains steadfast in supporting and working with its members and partners to provide relief speedily wherever it is needed.

  • 10 March 2023, DubaiUnited Arab Emirates – The International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai has successfully facilitated another humanitarian relief flight in response to the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria earlier this week. Guided by the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the IHC is committed to supporting affected communities with the resources they need to recover and rebuild.

A Damascus-bound flight, transporting relief items for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), departed from Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai, carrying 29 tons of aid, including blankets and solar lamps, to support 36,000 beneficiaries affected by the earthquake.
